Key West - Day ... I give up
February 19, 2006 by Joanne Brokaw
Let's face it. Do I really want to count down the days I'm here? Because that would mean it's one day closer to being time to go home.
Saturday: Cassie and Matt came down early this morning, arrived about 3:30 AM in her "new" car. She bought it, put the plates on and they hit the road. The guy she bought it from called this afternoon because she forgot to sign the check and he was surprised she took it on an 8 hr journey right after she got it. But what the heck. It should run whether she drove it 8 hrs around Tampa or 8 hrs on US 1.
First time we hit the beach today. Went to Smathers for a couple of hours. The water is amazingly gorgeous. Because the waves break off the coral reef several miles out, there's no waves, no seaweed washing up on shore, no junk. It's soft beautiful sand, lots of little shells, green and teal water, gulls screeching overhead, shore birds skipping along the surf.
The daily dilemma is where to eat dinner, so I get out three choices as we headed to Mallory Square for the sunset celebration. In typical Cassie style, we waited for her and left about an hour later than planned but it worked out. Saw the Cat Man do his schtick, then watched the hilarious British comic.
We planned to eat at Kelly's, which has a gorgeous atmosphere but just so-so food, from what we hear. But the lights strung throught the trees was too captivating to pass up. Turns out the wait was at least 90 mins so we headed out to find something else and that's when my lovely dinner plan fell apart.
I wanted a steak. I've had enough fish the last week to last me a while so I suggested we go to Two Friends. David is worried about money, but we decided on one nice meal while the kids were here.
I should have never had that Kaluha mudslide at Fat Tuesdays. Instead of insisting that we head to one of the restaurants on the list we'd agreed on ahead of time, we ended up at a tiny cafe that's part of the Old Customs House. It was cute, quaint, very laid back ... and I had fish and chips. And not the best of the week either.
Sunday, we're going out to dinner at someplace that has plates and glasses and cloth tableclothes. I'm hungry.
