In review: A Good Year

November 10, 2006 by Joanne Brokaw

A Good Year
(20th Century Fox)
Starring Russell Crowe, Albert Finney, Archie Panjabi, Marion Cotillard
Directed by Ridley Scott
Rated PG-13 for language and some sexual content

Reviewed by Joanne Brokaw

Headstrong, confident and ruthless financial bond trader Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) lives the good life in London, doing what he does best: making money. When his uncle (Albert Finney) dies and leaves him the entire estate, including the chateau and vineyard in Provence where Max spent much of his childhood, Max travels to France to sell the estate as quickly as possible. But when he hits several roadblocks - including an investigation into his trading back in London, a beautiful and feisty French woman that he runs off the road, and the arrival of the possible illegitimate daughter of his late uncle - Max’s life takes a detour.

“A Good Year” is a predictable romantic comedy (bad guy meets good girl and has a change of heart) but the gorgeous setting of Provence makes the film worth watching, even though you know before the movie starts how it will end. Recommendation: catch a matinee or take a date.
