PROJECTS FROM 2006 YOU MAY HAVE MISSED by Joanne Brokaw
Every year, hundreds of projects go unnoticed amidst an avalanche of new releases. Here is a sampling of great projects from Christian artists you may have missed:
Beauty in the Broken Starfield (Sparrow)
Spiritually-driven lyrics couple with pop/rock music to produce a worshipful, energetic project that’s a definitely not to be missed. Starfield is one of those bands that fly under the radar, critically-acclaimed but for some reason lacking the sales figures of other (less talented) bands. Released May 2006.
World On Fire By The Tree (Fervent)
Chuck Dennie’s departure from the band to pursue a calling in ministry set By The Tree on a new path, moving drummer Aaron Blanton to lead vocals/guitar and adding Garrett Goodwin to the trio, which also includes Ben Davis on bass. Their latest album, World on Fire, sounds like the By The Tree you know and love, but with a fresh perspective and a maturity that comes from adapting to change and being better for it. Released September 2006.
Wildcat Muriel Anderson (CgD Music)
From critically-acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist Muriel Anderson comes a beautiful album of vocal and instrumental songs inspired by stories from the road. Appearing on the album are special guests jazz drummer Danny Gottlieb; Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and legendary instrumental rocker/guitarist Duane Eddy; jazz guitarist and the first "touch virtuoso" Stanley Jordan; Grammy and Dove Award winning member of Take 6 Mark Kibble; Les Paul bassist Nicki Parrot; and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra strings. Released January 2006.
Mat Kearney Mat Kearney (Aware/Columbia Records)
This Oregon-native has appeared on CBS Saturday Morning and toured with Sheryl Crow and John Mayer, and his songs are all over television. And yet it’s possible that the Christian music fans have missed him entirely. This self-titled album is a unique mix of hip-hop beats, pop choruses, acoustic folk and spoken verses. Released April 2006.
Phil Wickham Phil Wickham (Simple/INO)
This debut album from this Southern California native is a refreshing change from the current flood of praise and worship CDs. Released April 2006.
Reach Warren Barfield (Essential)
With a jazzy, funky style all his own, singer songwriter Warren Barfield's sophomore CD is a don't miss for 2006.
And watch for this in early 2007:
Dream Again Phil Keaggy (Strobie Records)
Dream Again is Phil Keaggy’s first new vocal project of original compositions in six years, and it was worth the wait. Acoustic guitars and insightful lyrics combine for a musically rich and thought-provoking album that’ll remind you of a time when pop music was intelligent, creative, and genuinely emotional. Dream Again is a family affair, including songs about Keaggy's family and close friends, in addition to those that come out of his own struggles and experiences. The album features vocals from daughter Alicia as well as vocals and guitar from son Ian. Dream Again releases January 30, 2007.
