ShoutLife.com

February 14, 2007 by Joanne Brokaw

I got an email this morning from a friend inviting me to join a new online networking/social community called ShoutLife.com.

From what I can tell, it's a Christian MySpace. Similar layout, similar goal. Looks very nice.

Oh goody. Another way for Christians to avoid having to interact with the rest of the world.

Don't get me wrong. I totally see the benefit of having a safe place where Christians can interact safely online.

But just for a minute, consider what would happen if Christians got onto MySpace and did what Jesus commanded us to do - be salt and light?

With MySpace, you've been invited to the mission field. Christians have free reign to be bold, be loud, and be like Jesus without censorship. Your opinions, your thoughts, God's truth is welcome on MySpace, even if it is amidst the garbage.

And that garbage is the reason we've decided that it's not safe to play there. So we create our own safe little online community where we can talk to each other without the fear that someone will curse or show a provocative picture or ramble about their latest drinking escapade.

I see the benefit of a safe, online community, but I predict it'll become the alternative to MySpace and take the Christians right out of the place they need to be.

And while it's a nice idea for teens to have a safe networking site, anyone who works with teens - even Christians teens - knows that 1) they don't want anything to do with anything their parents are involved in; and 2) they can be mischievious and sinful right in the church parking lot.

Ironic that I'd get the email this morning. I'm half-way through with "Roaring Lambs" by Bob Briner. This is exactly what he's talking about in the book.
